A Place to Connect: Meet Our Teen Impact Group

“What support do you need?”

It was a simple question on a sign-up sheet, and yet one honest response spoke right to the heart of why our new Teen Impact Group exists.

“More friends, please.”

Founded by Hazel Mooney, a local high school junior, the Teen Impact Group was created to serve teens who are looking for a place to connect but find themselves in the in-between—feeling too old for rEcess but not old enough for bEfriend.

As the daughter of our co-founders and a sibling who grew up attending rEcess, Hazel understands 99 Balloons and its mission intimately. Following her parents’ example, she saw a need and is taking action to fill it. Last fall, she recruited over a dozen peers to form the Teen Impact Group, and they met with the 99 Balloons fellows and interns to learn more about disability before brainstorming what this new hangout could become.

Now, once a month, teens with and without disabilities gather for connEct—unstructured, joy-filled evenings designed for friendship.

First, attendees bonded over crafts. Then came a little friendly competition with board games and musical chairs. In April, they’ll get their groove on to a crowd-favorite playlist, featuring everything from KPop Demon Hunters to Queen. No matter the activity, they always share a meal.

It’s simple. It’s fun. And it’s working.

What started with four teens quickly doubled, drawing in students from across the community. Together, they’re building genuine friendships, which don’t always come easily in high school. As teens get older, the gap often widens, and opportunities to connect become fewer.

At connEct, the gap is closing, and that single, brave request is being honored: “More friends, please.”

99 Balloons continues to expand its impact here in Northwest Arkansas, and you can be part of it.
